Thanks to its mite climate, good position and territory, the area of Montespertoli is devoted to the vineyards cultivation. This area includes a wine cultivated territory of about 1.600 ha and about 1.400 ha are DOCG cultivated. It is possible to find excellent attestations of the quality of this wine area in the text of famous journalists such as the book “Vino” by Burt Anderson and “Italiens Grosse Wein” by Jeans Priewe. The annual production of grapes is of about hl. 140.110 and 91.152 DOCG.
The protection association which works in our Commune is the Consorzio del Chianti. The wine is, with extravergine oil, the most famous and significative product from history’s and production’s points of view. The production of the Chianti wine is the most important object of our producers. This aim can be attained by the traditional process called the governo in tuscan use. The governo make the wine fresher, vivider and full-bodied. With appropriate selections of grapes we are able to produce a special sort of Chianti wine destined to be aged and to reach the nomination of RISERVA. The Chianti wine RISERVA is requested by most expert clients and by the foreign market. Our white wines, obtained from Malvasia and Trebbiano grapes, have made important improvements thanks to the introduction of estimeed sorts of wines such as the Pinot bianco, Chardonnay and Riesling.
Our Vin Santo is also very celebrated. This sort of wine has a very important place in the countryside tradition. It is the beverage of great occasions. The origin of its name is a real mystery: maybe its name comes from the celebration of the Mass, or from the habitude to press grapes very late, after the All Saints’ Day. A lot of confectionery specialities can be accompanied by the Vin Santo because of its wonderful amber colour, its intense and ethereal perfume and its velvety and sweet flavour. The reimplantation of the new vineyards is the most important engagement of our producers. A very important problem is the sobstitution of the old vineyards with the new traditional ones which are obtained by clonal selections in order to reach an estimeed quality level. This is particularly important in this moment because it has been recognized the underzone Chianti Montepertoli.
